I’m going to be honest. I have always been bored with the debate over legalizing marijuana.
On my list of priorities it was just barely above “learn Ukrainian.”
In my younger years I wore my disdain for drug users like a badge of honor. I had grown up watching anti-drug commercials every few minutes. Even Eric Idle contributed:
Ironically enough I’d go on to attend the infamous SUNY New Paltz, where I was completely willing to get drunk but unflinching in my refusal to get stoned — that is until the last week of my senior year when I vaporized with a good friend and had an absolutely wonderful time. Nevertheless my sympathy for drug user was only marginally increased.
I still associated potheads with smelly losers that can’t get off the couch. You can see some of this contempt for yourself in the description of my first Hipsters comic.
I’m revealing all this because recently every last one of my negative perceptions surrounding marijuana changed after watching an amazing documentary, “The Culture High.”
I began as a skeptic. I figured it was going to be a “documentary” interviewing famous people whining about pot. And hey, sure enough Snoop Dog is indeed on their roster of interviewees.
What I didn’t expect, however, were all the scientists, doctors, economists, journalists, government employees, and parents!
This documentary breaks down each and every misconception about marijuana, and then exposes the driving force behind such misconceptions. It it well rounded, thoughtful, and inspiring.
While watching The Culture High there were times I was angry, times I laughed, and times when tears were rolling down my face. Which is saying something because I don’t cry easily!
And that’s all I’m going to say! I’d write more, but this is something you have to see for yourself.
The Culture High is on Netflix, you can watch it on YouTube for 4 bucks. I’m sure it’s on DVD.
Give it a watch, if you’re up for a major life change.
